"Rise & Shine (pheonix dactylifera)" Delaney Hello out there It's been a long, long time Two-thousand years One of a kind And here to seize My moment in the sun To rise and shine Rise and shine I remember When Jesus was young The carpenter The carpenter's son And then one day The word come from the sky To rise and shine Rise and shine Stuck in stasis Lonely, dark places Perfectly patient And always waiting For you They put me here For some kind of reason That isn't clear But I must believe And if you're looking for a sign I'm plain as any you might find That you can start again Just drink the light in through your skin And rise And shine Rise and shine Rise and shine Rise and shine

"Light & Shadow" Delaney Well The Creature from the Black Lagoon Rolls out of bed at 6:02 Puts on his sharkskin jacket Fake alligator shoes And he works in insurance sales Used to be famous But who could tell? He's just a fish out of water Little green around the gills Light and shadow On a silver screen Sometimes you gotta laugh Sometimes you wanna scream Sometimes you're sitting through the credits Still wondering what it means Light and shadow Light and shadow Well The Bride of the Monster She calls up her sponsor Had some trouble with her man Had to deal with the doctor And she promised him forever But now she's trying to find the best words To say the spark has gone out She can't put him back together Light and shadow On a silver screen Sometimes you gotta laugh Sometimes you wanna scream Sometimes you're sitting through the credits Still wondering what it means Light and shadow Light and shadow At the edge of my seat Waiting on the big reveal Though I kinda got lost Back there in the second reel Light and shadow On a silver screen Sometimes you gotta laugh Sometimes you wanna scream Sometimes you're sitting through the credits Still wondering what it means Light and shadow Light and shadow Light and shadow Light and shadow

"Seven Wonders (Requiem for Andre the Giant)" Delaney From the sweaty halls of some convention center You'd duck the doorframe as you would enter And the crowd would go insane As I waved a homemade sign And called your name And I've got a crumpled photograph Wish a smudge that was your autograph Should've taken care back then Still it's a treasure cause you held it in your hands Your big, giant hands Heroes rise And heroes fall World has room for seven wonders And that's all Fifteen years undefeated streak And you kept it up til Wrestlemania III We all saw what happened there Ninety-three thousand out their chairs As the giant goes down Heroes rise And heroes fall World has room for seven wonders And that's all From the scenic Alps of Grenoble, France To the USA with Vince McMahon And across the world for New Japan To umemployed Unemployed in Greenland Spent my childhood wishing I could be like you But looking back, I believe it's the truth There were times you wished you were like me As you crammed yourself into and airline seat The giant's headed home Heroes rise And heroes fall World has room for seven wonders And that's all That's all That's all

Midnight 03:36
"Midnight" Delaney Oh to be seventeen again Cat piss house and a mean old man A couple friends who understand Cause they grew up just the same Connie, Chuy, Jack, and Beth She's in love with Meredith Who's been saying she'll kill herself Since I can't remember when While the whole damn world's a 4A football game Well, we knew where we'd be when Friday came Midnight At The Rocky Horror Picture Show Eyeliner and pantyhose That's where I wanna go Someday I believe I'm gonna leave this town Cross that bridge and burn it down But I ain't thinking about it now Tonight it's me and my best girl and the old routine And those fearless bastards shadowing the screen They punk me every day at school Call me faggot in the locker room But hell I'll get it worse at home If it's one of those bad days So I just keep quiet and try to bide my time Singing "Science Fiction" in the back of my mind Midnight At The Rocky Horror Picture Show Eyeliner and pantyhose That's where I wanna go Someday I believe I'm gonna leave this town Cross that bridge and burn it down But I ain't thinking about it now Tonight it's me and my best guy and the old routine And those fearless bastards shadowing the screen Things changed Back in '99 when we lost M Chose our paths and off we went Never did the Time Warp again At midnight At The Rocky Horror Picture Show Eyeliner and pantyhose That's where I'd wanna go Back then Before I up and left that town Crossed that bridge and burn it down Well I'm thinking about it now About me and my best friends and the old routine And everything I was at seventeen Midnight At The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Bad Poetry 03:28
"Bad Poetry" Delaney She looks down at the coffee she won't drink And lays out all the evidence you'd need To find again whatever summer brings In autumn leaves You lie in bed and try to sleep away The shivers and the shortening of days While you fill your notebook page after page With bad poetry on how the seasons change And outside you'll find blinding snow Biting wind and bitter cold Why dig out your overcoat? No - stay inside And dream about the coming spring Of gentle rains and fields of green Knowing sure that everything Is running right on time As you hold on to whatever still remains You can't speak the words but you hum its sad refrain And you stare up at the ceiling and pretend Like you won't get up and do it all again While you stare up at the ceiling and pretend Like you won't get up and do it all again

"The Day The Dead Begin To Rise" Delaney On the day the dead begin to rise I'll be punching some damn clock At some nowhere nine to five And playing a show that night Where everyone ignores me And I will watch the realizations As their phones light up their faces And I will pack up my guitar And cut out a little early On the day the dead begin to rise I will meet you at the place Like we planned a thousand times Stocked up with weapons and supplies For this very occasion And amidst the failing strategies That people learned on AMC We will share a silent moment At the end of civilization And if it should to pass during the war To find your ex lover's face among the horde No waste of breathe "I told you so"s instead I'll hide my smile and shoot him in the head Goodbye Romeo On the day the dead begin to rise We'll be clear on this one thing Neither one of us Was in need of rescuing But we sure do like the company Holding hands there are the turning of the tide On the day the dead begin to rise Bowie's back and everything's alright On the day the dead begin to rise

"Stop Me If You've Heard This One" Delaney There's a story of a lady hitchhiker On the side of a lonely dirt road She steps out of the fog around midnight She's got her thumb out, she wears old timey clothes And the good Samaritan happens upon her He pulls over and he offers a ride And the stranger don't say more than "Thank You" As he opens the door and she climbs inside Stop me if you've heard this one Stop me if you've heard this one And there is an oddness to this young woman With the hint of a stain on her shirt And the way that she can't take her eyes off her hands And the way that she smells of the earth And the driver he makes conversation But she don't know the news of the day She says "yes sir" or "no sir" or nothing As he tries telling jokes all in vain He says "stop me if you've heard this one" Stop me if you've heard this one And in a while she asks to pull over Though there really ain't nothing out here And he turns to give some kind of warning But she's gone like she weren't even there And he drives that dirt road and he shudders But for reasons he cannot recall Then the clock on the dash strikes midnight again And a lady hitchhiker steps out of the fog Stop me if you've heard this one Stop me if you've heard this one Stop me if you've heard this one Stop me if you've heard this one

The Comedian 03:42
"The Comedian" Delaney & Pedigo Well you can't see the stars in Gary, Indiana At least not on that stage or at least not tonight And streets are as cold as the looks that they gave me When I did the one about the president's wife And I'm sorry if I get lost sometimes Just trying to find what makes you smile Is this thing on? Is this thing on? It's buzzards on blue in Barstow, California Got my hair of the dog, where's the Greyhound at? Cause last night they taught me why they call it Death Valley Then they paid me the door and the slots took it back And I'm sorry if I get lost sometimes Just trying to find what makes you smile Is this thing on? Is this thing on? The ceiling fan's limping here in our apartment I got back from the road and I can't meet your eyes The sad clown cliche done washed off the makeup And now if you ain't leaving, I'm wondering why And I'm sorry if I get lost sometimes Just trying to find what makes you smile Is this thing on? Is this thing on? Is this thing on? Is this thing on?

Stars 03:00
"Stars" That was me Lying on a blanket staring skyward Tracing constellations with my finger Knowing every story they were named for That was me Drifting off to dream so I could wander Among the planets and the gods - among the monsters King of all the cosmos and the backyard But now I look up at the dark And all I see are stars And it just breaks my heart All I see are stars That was me The mutineer pirate on the playground Tamer of the tigers in the treehouse I wouldn't even recognize me now But that was me Before I started answering the questions And boarded up the windows to the kingdom And shut it all away and called it wisdom So when I look up at the dark All I see are stars And it just breaks my heart All I see are stars And I don't know, but I believe That you were just like me And you look up at the dark And all you see are stars All you see are stars All you see are stars All you see are stars All you see are stars And don't it break your heart? All you see are stars

Scattered 02:23
"Scattered" Delaney I'd rather be scattered Than smothered and covered Y'all spread my ashes at a Waffle House And be good to each other And you can visit Every Sunday morning On your way into church And there's a spot by the window Where the sun comes in just so I don't need a lot of space Just a dash in that flower face And they're plastic So you don't have to worry About them changing me out So let us pray That what we order comes out that way And if it don't We won't complain Maybe she's had a hard day I'd rather be scattered Than smothered and covered Y'all spread my ashes at this Waffle House And be good to each other And you can visit Every Sunday morning On your way into church

In memory of Lina Jeu Starnes

Apart from those already mentioned, I want to thank Wes & Anita Collins, Kerry Farren, Nicolette Good, Betsy Badwater, Myron Rosen & Maria Sanchez, Deb Rouse & Lindsey Lee & my entire extended New Folk family. Also, my actual family.

Here’s one for the the goths and theater kids, those who are depressed but seldom sad, the people of science, actors in rubber suits, that woman shouting at whatever Satan she was seeing outside of the Rammstein concert that one time, David Sedaris, Mike Birbiglia, Tig Notaro, Takashi Miike, and of course – Andre the Giant.

And to you, who are reading this right now: There is no one lurking behind you with ill-intent. And if there were, it would already be too late.
