"The Saint of Cobb County" He was always a loner And a little bit slow And he talked to himself all the time And I shutter to think What drove him to drink But it drove him there every night Back in '34 The drought was so bad The place was just blowin' away Til that day on the square Without reason at all When he fell to his knees and he prayed And when he was finished He said an "Amen" And I'll be damned if it didn't rain And after that day When the farms were all saved They gave him a brand new name They called him the Saint of Cobb County And they knew he was out of his mind But the money still flowed like water And he'd turn the water to wine And they had him blessin' the babies And layin' his hands on the lame And maybe it worked and maybe it didn't But they still loved him just the same It wasn't long Til people were comin' To see for themselves what they'd heard And he didn't quite preach But he'd mumble a speech And they'd be hangin' on every word Til finally one day He just disappeared Left 'em all wonderin' where he could be Til somebody stood up And said "He is risen!" And they all jumped on board to agree They called him the Saint of Cobb County And they knew he was out of his mind But the money still flowed like water And he'd turn the water to wine And they had him blessin' the babies And layin' his hands on the lame And maybe it worked and maybe it didn't But they still loved him just the same

Wine & Roses 03:48
"Wine & Roses" She's seen a lot since 40 Says she's past her prime But our boy ain't worried He just ain't that kind Thinks she's plenty good lookin' And he's no spring chicken himself He just walks up to her Cool as you please Says "I sure hope you save The next dance for me" And she laughs and looks him over Shrugs and says "I might as well." Then he takes her hand and leads her out to the floor She says "To tell the truth I don't dance much anymore" "Cause I've had enough Of wine & roses They just prick my fingers And give me headache's in the mornin' I don't ask much A calm heart and a strong hand Save the rest for the faerie tales And just love me like a real man." A few hours later In a hotel room They're doin' what two Lonely people do When they find each other Strangers becomin' lovers In the dark And maybe he's nervous Cause it's been a long time But she ain't hard to please And he's doin' just fine And when they are finished She just lays there in the stillness Of his arms Then as she's leavin' he asks "can I see you again?" And she just smiles and says "Well that depends... Cause I've had enough Of wine & roses They just prick my fingers And give me headache's in the mornin' I don't ask much A calm heart and a strong hand Save the rest for the faerie tales And just love me like a real man." And it's been fifteen years now Since he danced with her that night And they've never gotten married And they've never had a fight And he doesn't say "I love you" Cause that ain't how he was raised But she don't need to hear it Cause she means it when she says "I've had enough Of wine & roses They just prick my fingers And give me headache's in the mornin' I don't ask much A calm heart and a strong hand Save the rest for the faerie tales And just love me like a real man."

"Ramblin' Jack" Jack's daddy was a travelin' bible salesman And his mama was a housewife on the way And her husband knew it weren't his kid So he cursed poor Jack for what she did With every breath until his dyin' day At seventeen our Jack became an outlaw For it must have seemed appealing at the time He stabbed a man and took his wallet Cause it was easier than askin' for it And thus began a violent life of crime Ramblin' Jack we're all so sorry That it had to come to this And we'll never know whatever made you A monster right up til the grave But to tell the truth we're all happy that you're dead His luck ran out one night near Houston, Texas And time came to pay for all that he had done His trial was a short affair And they sent him to that electric chair And no one shed a tear when he was gone You can find him in that prison churchyard Right to this very day Even though the stone is old and worn It says "Here lies Ramblin' Jack" And his last words there on his epitaph Are "I don't regret a thing but bein' born."
4.
"William & Sweet Mary" Young William left Mary standin' there at the station And his train pulled away as she cried He said "I'm headed to the city. I'm gonna find me my fortune Then I'll come home and make you my bride" Sweet Mary was patient and she prayed every night Sayin' "Good Lord, you watch over him" But he fell in with thieves and one cruel winter's evenin' He joined the wretched ranks of the damned His letter was passed from one hand to another Til somehow it made it to me It said "Mary I tried, but by the time that this finds you I'll be swingin' from some ol' hangman's tree" Mary she cried when she read that blood-stained letter Then she jumped in the river and drown Sayin' "Good Lord if I'm meant to go on without him Then you'll pull me out before I go down." "Good Lord if I'm meant to go on without him Then you'll pull me out before I go down."

Boquillas 04:06
"Boquillas" Daddy wasn't daddy when I was growin' up Just some guy who disappeared And though we never talked about him much There were these stories that I'd hear Bout this family down in Mexico Some other wife, some of the kids Some other life he wanted more, I guess Than the one he started with To tell the truth he never came to mind Til my phone rang the other day They said "I'm sorry, but you're father's died We called to settle the estate" That man always was a mystery to me But what am I to make of this He left me a house down in Boqillas Ain't even quite sure where that is Whatever happened to that other wife he had Them other boys he called his own Well that was twenty-somethin' years ago So I may never know That man always was a mystery to me But what am I to make of this He left me a house down in Boqillas Ain't even quite sure where that is So come this time next week I'll be drivin' towards the border Still wonderin' what it means Sittin' in a house down in Boquillas Sortin' some dead stranger's things

"One Foot In Front Of The Other" Three floors up and two doors over Don't forget your new phone number Call the movers, meet the neighbors Check the want ads in the paper Keep it simple, first things first And just try not to think of her You put one foot in front of the other So you look just like you're walkin' Though you're only fallin' forward Call your lawyer in the mornin' Don't be late to next week's hearin' Just keep breathin' they won't see it Father says that tears are weakness Get the kids at six o'clock And don't you meet her eyes when you go to pick 'em up You put one foot in front of the other So you look just like you're walkin' Though you're only fallin' forward And one day you will wake to find that time has healed all wounds And everything's gonna be alright It's gonna be alright At least that's what they keep telling you To put one foot in front of the other One foot in front of the other One foot in front of the other So you look just like you're walkin'
7.
"A Miner's Prayer" Well we sweat and we toil And we shoulder the burden To the victor go the spoils So we surely must be losin' We work and we cling To this life we've been given And we hope we don't die In this tomb that we're diggin' We pray to the sky that we barely see And we pray for the families we're missin' And we pray there's a light at the end of this tunnel We pray to you Lord, if you're listenin' The walls started shakin' And they fell all around us We crawled out of the earth Twenty men unaccounted The coal company says We can't dig any further So we sealed up that hole And we started us another We pray to the sky that we barely see And we pray for the families we're missin' And we pray there's a light at the end of this tunnel We pray to you Lord, if you're listenin' We came far and wide With our picks and our shovels And we lived side by side And looked after one another When the union came around Lord we had that company runnin' But now the strike is lockin' down And the hard times there a-comin' So we pray to the sky that we barely see And we pray for the families we're missin' And we pray there's a light at the end of this tunnel We pray to you Lord, if you're listenin' We pray there's a light at the end of this tunnel We pray to you Lord, if you're listenin'
8.
"Girl With A Gun" I saw you that day out in the pourin' rain Just-a running' by the side of the street You had a bag in one had and that Colt in the other You were the finest thing I'd ever seen You flagged me down and you pointed your pistol And said "Boy if you'll be obliged I ain't got no car and you ain't too bad lookin' And I surely could use a ride I surely could use a ride" And we drove all through the night Siren's screamin' somewhere behind Out on the road Out on the run Just me and you The girl with a gun It was ten in the morning when we finally slowed up And decided the coast was all clear And you pointed to an exit to some old gravel road And said "won't you pull over there" We rested til evening and talked for a while Then made love as the sun went down We made love as the sun went down Then we drove all through the night With you there sittin' right by my side Out on the road Out on the run Just me and you, babe My girl with a gun Then you stopped cross the border just before dawn Then you opened my door Said "here's where you get off" Then you blew me a kiss as you were drivin' away You thanked me for the ride But you never told me your name
9.
"Sam's Custom Wood" They tell me that I's about 4 years old Covered in sawdust from head to toe Hangin' at the shop with a bunch of my partners in crime All of my buddies were my grandad's age And they were dyin' off faster than 8-track tape But I never really noticed and they never really seemed to mind I was fluent in their language by the time I was 5 Made my mama so mad she'd like to skin us alive And I soon learned you can't say "Bullshit" at Sunday school They'd be sawin' and sandin' all day long The one's that wasn't missin' fingers had 'em sewed back on I was ridin' saw horses and learnin' bout dangerous tools With saw blades buzzin' they'd be smokin' and cussin' It was back when times were good Listenin' and learnin' down at Sam's Custom Wood They talked about the times when they were young and mean Drinkin' and fightin' were the usual themes And one of 'em always had some kinda news to share I sat in silence as I watched 'em build Heard 'em braggin' bout how many Japs they killed Their VA troubles and the benefits of Medicare With saw blades buzzin' they'd be smokin' and cussin' It was back when times were good Swingin' and laughin' down at Sam's Custom Wood I heard their thoughts on unions and the changin' times The rate of inflation on the price of pine That cigarettes were cheaper when you rolled your own And some things oughta be left the hell alone With saw blades buzzin' they'd be smokin' and cussin' It was back when times were good I was livin' and learnin' down at Sam's Custom Wood With the tattoos fadin' and the black hairs greyin' I was growin' up as fast as I could Swingin' all day down at Sam's Custom Wood I'd be swingin' all day down at Sam's Custom Wood
10.
"There's A Chill" When I get like I will With the whiskey and the pills She is there to pick me off the floor And just because she don't mind Doesn't mean that it's right So here I am With my hand on the door And there's a note to explain All the terrible things That I've done and never had the heart to tell her I thought I owed her that at least But still I take it when I leave Cause I know If she found out it would kill her I'm in a motel by the coast With the shadows and the ghosts And some girl I met sometime that evening When she calls me and she's cryin' And she's askin' me why And for the life of me I can't think of a reason One week later, 6am I come stumblin' in And there's a chill in the air of our bedroom And she just curls up in my arms With a lie to keep her warm A "Goodnight" And a whispered "I love you"

"It's Just A Feelin'" There's a warm breeze blowin' Through a window left open Stirs the cobwebs in the corner of the room Where there's an old beat up lounger And a man sittin' down there And a TV he's starin' right through He's thinkin' back to his youth And this girl he once knew And she very well could've been his wife If he'd have stuck around But that's all over now Another time, another place, another life And God knows he still wonders And he'll always want her Somewhere in the back of his mind But he's got his family And he wouldn't change things It's just a feelin' that he gets sometimes He runs his fingers Over an old warn out picture And a smile creeps across his face When he thinks of the ocean The hot sun, the waves rollin' The sand castles and the love that they made And God knows he still wonders And he'll always want her Somewhere in the back of his mind But he's got his family And he wouldn't change things It's just a feelin' that he gets sometimes He dials her old number But nobody answers And sighs as he hangs up the phone Then his wife's home from work With the kids just behind her And before he knows it That feelin' is gone
