"Lou's Cafe" Junkie walks in about 5am Has a seat and a look around Sees this young, high-strung sorta businessman Just-a starin' his breakfast down One smiles and waves The other says "good day" And they both think at the same time "Coulda been me, Lord. Coulda been me Lord. There but for your grace go I" And our waitress has been here for 17 years Cause she ain't got the guts to quit And she hates the lights And she hates the smell But hell, at least she's used to it And there's a cop in today Thinks he owns the place She gives him donuts and dirty looks And all she really wants is a cigarette break And a coupla million bucks At Lou's Cafe Nothin' ever changes See the same folks every day Lonely worn out faces here With nothin' much to do When you just can't win you come to Lou's There's a man in the back with a s dish and a rag And he's lookin' a little too tense Cause it's hard to make a living Much less meet girls With that lisp and that sex offense But still he treasures Those smaller pleasures And he's wearin' a secret grin Cause that bitter old waitress is wearin' his favorite That flower-print dress again At Lou's Cafe Nothin' ever changes See the same folks every day Lonely worn out faces here With nothin' much to do When you just can't win you come to Lou's Just up the highway Ain't hard to find Twenty-four seven Three-sixty-five Just up the highway Ain't hard to find Twenty-four seven Three-sixty-five

"A Hole In The Sky" There's a hole in the sky where the rain comes pourin' in I hear it lands on all God's children every now and then But it's been rainin' for so long I'm wonderin' what I did to him There's a hole in the sky where the rain comes pourin' in There's a hole in my pocket where my money falls out It used to fill up all these empty bottles layin' round the house One I thought I couldn't live without you now I know without a doubt There's a hole in my pocket where my money falls out There's a hole in my heart where I know it used to hurt I've been drinkin' to forget you, never thought that it would work Now I don't feel nothin', I don't know which one is worse There's a hole in my heart where I know it used to hurt
4.
"Whiskey & Pills" There's holes punched in the drywall Leadin' down the back hall towards the bed And there's a bloodstain on your t-shirt And bruises shaped like fingers rung round my neck And a couple guilty smiles Just-a tryin' hard to hide behind cigarettes Don't we go together Like whiskey and pills Don't it feel just like heaven Til you wake up in hell And I think leavin' might kill me But I know lovin' you will Don't we go together Like whiskey and pills Officer good evening I know I said you wouldn't be seein' us again So I apologize to you And to whoever had the sense to call it in Truth is I worry some myself, sir It's a scary kinda love we're makin' Don't we go together Like whiskey and pills Don't it feel just like heaven Til you wake up in hell And I think leavin' might kill me But I know lovin' you will Don't we go together Like whiskey and pills And by the first light of the mornin' I fall into an uneasy dream Where I go with no goodbye And you never even try to follow me Don't we go together Like whiskey and pills Don't it feel just like heaven Til you wake up in hell And I think leavin' might kill me But I know lovin' you will Don't we go together Like whiskey and pills Don't we go together, my love Like whiskey and pills

"Girl With A Gun" I saw you that day out in the pourin' rain Just-a running' by the side of the street You had a bag in one had and that Colt in the other You were the finest thing I'd ever seen You flagged me down and you pointed your pistol And said "Boy if you'll be obliged I ain't got no car and you ain't too bad lookin' And I surely could use a ride I surely could use a ride" And we drove all through the night Siren's screamin' somewhere behind Out on the road Out on the run Just me and you The girl with a gun It was ten in the morning when we finally slowed up And decided the coast was all clear And you pointed to an exit to some old gravel road And said "won't you pull over there" We rested til evening and talked for a while Then made love as the sun went down We made love as the sun went down Then we drove all through the night With you there sittin' right by my side Out on the road Out on the run Just me and you, babe My girl with a gun Then you stopped cross the border just before dawn Then you opened my door Said "here's where you get off" Then you blew me a kiss as you were drivin' away You thanked me for the ride But you never told me your name
6.
"Smoke & Mirrors" There's a neon light that's burnin' bright But it barely cuts the haze There's a jukebox and a bartender That have both seen better days There's a tap that pours salvation out And some friends to cheer me up And a little bag tucked in my coat In case that ain't enough But it's all just smoke and mirrors Just a trick in our own minds When we raise our glasses up And give a toast to these good times It's all just smoke and mirrors Little lies we tell ourselves Cause truth be told if times were good We'd all be somewhere else There's a junkie in the parking lot And he wants me too believe He's got nothin' in his pockets And nothin' hidden up his sleaves There's a preacher on the TV screen Sayin' heaven can be mine But he's got the same look in his eyes As the man who waits outside And it's all just smoke and mirrors Just a trick in our own minds When we raise our glasses up And give a toast to these good times It's all just smoke and mirrors Little lies we tell ourselves Cause truth be told if times were good We'd all be somewhere else But we've all got our delusions And the masks we hide behind So here's to you and to whatever gets you through the night Cause it's all just smoke and mirrors Just a trick in our own minds When we raise our glasses up And give a toast to these good times It's all just smoke and mirrors Little lies we tell ourselves Cause truth be told if times were good We'd all be somewhere else Truth be told if times were good We'd all be somewhere else

"A Miner's Prayer" Well we sweat and we toil And we shoulder the burden To the victor go the spoils So we surely must be losin' We work and we cling To this life we've been given And we hope we don't die In this tomb that we're diggin' We pray to the sky that we barely see And we pray for the families we're missin' And we pray there's a light at the end of this tunnel We pray to you Lord, if you're listenin' The walls started shakin' And they fell all around us We crawled out of the earth Twenty men unaccounted The coal company says We can't dig any further So we sealed up that hole And we started us another We pray to the sky that we barely see And we pray for the families we're missin' And we pray there's a light at the end of this tunnel We pray to you Lord, if you're listenin' We came far and wide With our picks and our shovels And we lived side by side And looked after one another When the union came around Lord we had that company runnin' But now the strike is lockin' down And the hard times there a-comin' So we pray to the sky that we barely see And we pray for the families we're missin' And we pray there's a light at the end of this tunnel We pray to you Lord, if you're listenin' We pray there's a light at the end of this tunnel We pray to you Lord, if you're listenin'

"Ask The Bear" This bird She went to market And that's where She met the bear And he was all that she ever wanted A little loud But she don't care And the bear said "Well Birdie, I love you" And he took her By the wing They went back to the nest Now it's always a mess But what's a little dirt To a good thing? If it ain't broke Don't you fix it If it's a little cracked It still might work And how it looks my friend Just don't matter in the end Ask the bear Ask the bird Pretty soon They're raisin' a wolf cub Cutest thing You ever saw But sometimes he just don't listen And he steals the neighbors chickens Wolves will be wolves After all But if it ain't broke Don't you fix it If it's a little cracked It still might work And how it looks my friend Just don't matter in the end Ask the bear Ask the bird And they got a another on the way And a stack of bills to pay And a couple words of wisdom they got hung up in a frame If it ain't broke Don't you fix it If it's a little cracked It still might work And how it looks my friend Just don't matter in the end Ask the bear Ask the bird

"Cops & Robbers" Billy's on the front porch Plastic badge and finger pistols Johnny's out there in the woods somewhere With a stick shaped like a rifle And when the bullets start to flyin' They both cry out and double over Nobody made it out alive But they both made it home for supper Cops and robbers Silly games children play Cops and robbers Bang bang you're dead Billy moved on uptown When his mama got promoted Johnny stuck around the neigborhood Never did get up to no good Billy joined the police Like his father had before him Johnny bought himself a pistol When he just ran out of options Cops and robbers Silly games children play Cops and robbers Bang bang you're dead Johnny holds that pistol In the face of some bank teller Billy takes the call Just a couple minutes later Lights are flashin' , siren's wailin Got his foot down on the floor Johnny's heart's up in his throat As he slips on out the backdoor Johnny's runnin' down an alley When that cruiser cuts him off But he's always been a cowboy Goes into his coat to draw He's just about to fire When he recognizes his friend Bill Billy says "Hey man, I'll stall em Stay outta sight and run like hell" Cops and robbers Silly games children play Cops and robbers Bang bang you're dead Cops and robbers Silly games children play Cops and robbers Bang bang you're dead Bang bang you're dead Bang bang you're dead

"Old Flames" You called me at midnight And I was over by one And no one apologized For not speakin' in months Cause sometimes you get lonely When he ain't at home And that's when you want me And I can't say no Old flames burn slow And they don't die easy We're broken, I know In all of these pieces But they'll still fit together If you hold em just so It's been a long time, baby But old flames burn slow We don't do much talkin' So we don't have to fight And all the bad blood between us It just don't matter tonight And you're like my favorite song The one I love and don't know why The one I can't play much these days Cause it always did make me cry Old flames burn slow And they don't die easy We're broken, I know In all of these pieces But they'll still fit together If you hold em just so It's been a long time, baby But old flames burn slow You'll never be mine, baby But old flames burn slow

"Dead Man's Boots" He walked into One-Eyed Jack's Cantina like he'd done a hundred times And from the moment that he entered that whole place went deathly quiet He found his girl Teresa who was always waitin' there Paid with some dead traveler's money, then he took her up the stairs He never spoke a word but he's always treat her kind And by now she'd just stopped wonderin' why he chose her every time She was happy just to hold him and he was happy too it seemed And sometimes she'd ask him questions just to fill the space between Why do you wear a dead man's boots? Where'd you get those nasty scars? Don't you tire of that wall of iron You got built around your heart? Don't you see those creepin' shadows standin', waitin' in the wings? Why're you racin' off to hell when you could stay right here with me? One day word blew into town that someone robbed the Adair train But they took two in the back as they made their getaway Teresa found him in her room lyin' bleedin' in her bed She ran to his side and kissed him then she held him close and said Why do you wear a dead man's boots? Why do you have to live so hard? Don't you tire of that wall of iron You got built around your heart? Don't you see those creepin' shadows standin', waitin' in the wings? Don't go racin' off to hell when you could stay right here with me He took a folded piece of paper and he slipped it in her hand He said "There you'll find my fortune, never have to work again I just wanted you to know that I've loved you all these years" Then he died there in her arms with her voice ringin' in his ears Why do you wear a dead man's boots? Why do you have to live so hard? Don't you tire of that wall of iron You got built around your heart? Don't you see those creepin' shadows standin', waitin' in the wings? Don't go racin' off to hell when you could stay right here with me Don't go racin' off to hell when you could stay right here with me Why're you racin' off to hell when you could stay right here with me?

"Ramblin' Jack" Jack's daddy was a travelin' bible salesman And his mama was a housewife on the way And her husband knew it weren't his kid So he cursed poor Jack for what she did With every breath until his dyin' day At seventeen our Jack became an outlaw For it must have seemed appealing at the time He stabbed a man and took his wallet Cause it was easier than askin' for it And thus began a violent life of crime Ramblin' Jack we're all so sorry That it had to come to this And we'll never know whatever made you A monster right up til the grave But to tell the truth we're all happy that you're dead His luck ran out one night near Houston, Texas And time came to pay for all that he had done His trial was a short affair And they sent him to that electric chair And no one shed a tear when he was gone You can find him in that prison churchyard Right to this very day Even though the stone is old and worn It says "Here lies Ramblin' Jack" And his last words there on his epitaph Are "I don't regret a thing but bein' born."

"The Night I Killed Bubbles The Clown" In the distance I could still see the carnival lights The sky was black, the moon was green It was me and a shovel and a friend of mine And a can of gasoline I had to tell someone so I told Gary the Geek But he told the Dog Boy, who always had a bone to pick with me And when it got to Big Hilda Hell, you shoulda heard that fat lady sing I brought the whole circus down The night I killed Bubbles the Clown Ringmaster Charlie was headed for the border that day But they caught him south of Austin, hauled him in and put him in chains Now he's drivin' them rail spikes I hear he still curses my name I brought the whole circus down I brought the whole circus down I brought the whole circus down The night I killed Bubbles the Clown Now The Pinhead's in the pin The Flyini Frenchman's in the ground Hung himself from the trapeze when the law come sniffin' round They found the trailer in the woods But not a shred of the remains Just the walls all covered in blood And grease paint I saw the prosecutor droolin' just describin' the scene That whole court went kangaroo And nobody got away clean Nobody but me And I don't expect you to ever understand So I'll take the truth to my grave But under the makeup he was a different man And I think it's better this way I brought the whole circus down I brought the whole circus down I brought the whole circus down The night I killed Bubbles the Clown

"Wine & Roses" She's seen a lot since 40 Says she's past her prime But our boy ain't worried He just ain't that kind Thinks she's plenty good lookin' And he's no spring chicken himself He just walks up to her Cool as you please Says "I sure hope you save The next dance for me" And she laughs and looks him over Shrugs and says "I might as well." Then he takes her hand and leads her out to the floor She says "To tell the truth I don't dance much anymore" "Cause I've had enough Of wine & roses They just prick my fingers And give me headache's in the mornin' I don't ask much A calm heart and a strong hand Save the rest for the faerie tales And just love me like a real man." A few hours later In a hotel room They're doin' what two Lonely people do When they find each other Strangers becomin' lovers In the dark And maybe he's nervous Cause it's been a long time But she ain't hard to please And he's doin' just fine And when they are finished She just lays there in the stillness Of his arms Then as she's leavin' he asks "can I see you again?" And she just smiles and says "Well that depends... Cause I've had enough Of wine & roses They just prick my fingers And give me headache's in the mornin' I don't ask much A calm heart and a strong hand Save the rest for the faerie tales And just love me like a real man." And it's been fifteen years now Since he danced with her that night And they've never gotten married And they've never had a fight And he doesn't say "I love you" Cause that ain't how he was raised But she don't need to hear it Cause she means it when she says "I've had enough Of wine & roses They just prick my fingers And give me headache's in the mornin' I don't ask much A calm heart and a strong hand Save the rest for the faerie tales And just love me like a real man."

"Might As Well Stay The Night" Two old friends Two old lovers Weren't meanin' to But ran into each other At the grocery store Just a few blocks away From his new apartment Now she's back at his place And they're talkin' a little And laughin' a lot About where they were goin' And how far they got Then the bottle comes out He pours the first round And it ain't long before they both lose count It was one, two Kick off your shoes Three, four Have a few more Five, six Gimme a kiss Seven, eight It's gettin' kinda late Nine, ten What was I sayin' again? Do you remember when We used to do this all the time? You might as well stay the night Might as well stay the night Might as well stay the night There's a great big ugly world outside You might as well stay the night By the early light Of the noon day sun There's a naked heap Of legs and arms Both wishin' they Remembered more Of the happenins The night before She squints and smiles He just laughs Tryin' to recall The fun they'd had Drank the hair of the dog Got to talkin' some They never did get their clothes back on It was one, two Where are my shoes? Three, four Have a few more Five, six Gimme a kiss Seven, eight It's gettin' kinda late Nine, ten What was I sayin' again? Do you remember when We used to do this all the time? You might as well stay the night Might as well stay the night Might as well stay the night We're both butt naked too drunk to drive You might as well stay the night Might as well stay the night Might as well stay the night There's a great big ugly world outside You might as well stay the night Might as well stay the night Might as well stay the night We're both butt naked too drunk to drive You might as well stay the night
