...meanwhile 02:25
“...meanwhile” by Andrew Delaney Meanwhile In the garden of Eden There's a serpent weeping Realizing what he's done Well god damn Now they're gonna hate snakes forever He looks at the woman Says they won't like you too much either Aw man And meanwhile This guy says to some other guy I got this little light of mine I'm gonna let it shine I know These Romans think we're dangerous They feed us to lions and such But I believe he's more than just A man And meanwhile Your daughter's goldfish died And she's crying asking why There's gotta be these facts to life And meanwhile Someone's beating on a pulpit And they're singing like they've lost it Let it shine! Let it shine! Let it shine! Meanwhile Maybe there's a heaven It's full of goldfish, lions, and Romans And one apologetic serpent But meanwhile While we hating snakes forever We ought to learn to love each other Maybe say it all together Amen Amen Amen

“Napoleon (3,000 Measly Dollars)” I believe it's time I tell you that I love you Though my frazzled nerves They have failed me in the past And subtlety, well It ain't working like I want it to But I could make another stupid joke Yeah, let's go with that And our friends are content To drop hints and stand around laughing And truth is, well You probably already know the truth But I believe they've got a betting pool On if it's ever gonna happen So maybe you ain't feelin me Or you just want Steve to lose Take that Steve When Napoleon died Some doctor cut him up and harvested his organs (it's true) Gave his heart and other parts to a Corsican priest I guess for safe keeping Oh don't make that face at me You asked what I was reading Now there's this poem I admire It's called “Tactics & Strategy” And I've liked it a long, long time But never shared it with anyone And I mean no disrespect To Mario Benedetti It's just that last line never set right with me So I'm trying to write my own Well Napoleon's mummified penis was sold at an auction to a urologist in New Jersey And given what it was you'd have thought it'd bring in a little bit more money This world has never made much sense to me I don't suppose it'll start now But I believe it's time I tell you that I love you I believe it's time

Giallo 03:11
“Giallo” There's a line our on Strickland Street Where the sunflowers stop They spring wild for miles But they can't seem to grow in this town And I was telling you one day As you stood in my doorway I can't even remember if you were coming or going now But you were wearing that red dress And we painted the walls All the colors of giallo Talked Lovecraft and Van Gogh And just played pretend And there's a poetry to it Though the plot's hard to follow But I can pick up the thread every now and again Morning sun speckled gold on your face Damn the consequences Camera zooms in On a red dress in a heap on the floor And I could lose a whole night to the daydream Staring hard at a photo that's fading And if the narrator's lying I don't even care anymore It's still gonna end badly And we painted the walls All the colors of giallo Talked Waits and Argento And just played pretend And there's a poetry to it Though the plots hard to follow But I can pick up the thread every now and again I can pick up the thread every now and again

Astronauts 02:37
“Astronauts” Well I read it in a paper Must've blown here in the wind Ten years til no tigers Ten years til no honey bees My god, how long has it been? And weren't we the plucky underdogs In some ugly duckling story? Didn't we have it all? Didn't we shock the world? A bunch of monkeys Bound for glory And you wouldn't believe it now You wouldn't believe it now But we were astronauts I saw a picture of the Earth from space Made me feel so insignificant I remember staring up at the bones of dinosaurs You were so young back then And you wouldn't believe it now You wouldn't believe it now But we were astronauts And it all turned out as if we'd planned it Everyone just doing like their old man did And it's not our nature It's just our branding Go out and carve your name in the last tree standing And you wouldn't believe it now You wouldn't believe it now But we were astronauts We were astronauts
5.
“Godzilla vs. King Kong (1962)” Boom goes the bomb over Hiroshima I was just a little boy myself But now you oughta see my Bulletproof hide and my skyscraper silhouette Spines on my back And my deadly atomic breath A pacifist out there in the Pacific Ocean Sleeping in Pandora's Box Until they blew it open Mama's an iguana and I guess it's an odd mix But Dad's the military industrial complex Oh now What's that sound? It's the sound of a reckoning Coming down Oh now What's that sound It's the sound of a reckoning And here comes the challenger In the belly of a ship Far from home Ain't really sure where this thing is going He's been tricked and trapped and bound and chained Wondering if he'll ever see his people again Now they're pointing and they're staring Like he's some kinda freak All to make somebody's pockets deeper When he's free they wanna treat him like came to start a war Now where have I heard that story before? Oh now What's that sound? It's the sound of a reckoning Coming down Oh now What's that sound It's the sound of a reckoning Meanwhile, back home The whole place a fixer upper War done tore it apart So why even bother? Somebody says you can do yourself a favor And start you up a brand new life Out across the water And Kong? Well he ain't really doing any better He can't find work And they stuck him in the ghetto Til there's a giant lizard Now he's man of the hour Go and be all you can be You can fight the foreign power But that ain't too cool, see Cause that's me And now it's high noon We're standing in the street And I hear somebody whisper Let duty kill the beast And then it kind hits me I know just where I am The place that stuck the Japanese in internment camps Bought and sold people Cut a trail of tears And it dawns on the king exactly who he is And he smiles and I smile My brand new friend and me Cause we've got an understanding That we've got a common enemy Oh now What's that sound? It's the sound of a reckoning Coming down Oh now What's that sound It's the sound of a reckoning It's the sound of a reckoning

“Feels Like it's True” Let me draw you a picture A little box house and couple of stick figures Shining sun up there in the corner Smiling with face of god Blue skies all around And big red flowers in the ground They bloom and they tower above And that simple and happy and comfort and love And this one's me And I think that's you The details aren't clear But it feels like it's true It feels like it's true Or I could write you a song, see I've got a voice and a verse and the spirit upon me I've tried it before but it turned out all wrongly With folks I remember remembering fondly But this time it's different The rhythm or the tune The details aren't clear But it feels like it's true It feels... Just words in the air Invisible to the naked eye Just gotta put these rose-colored glasses on I look silly, but I don't mind Cause when we tell our story We'll gloss over the parts Where we're sleeping or boring And hold them all rapt at the theoretical party We're theoretically talking to And we'll wink at each other From across the room The details aren't clear But it feels like it's true It feels like it's true

“The Pamphlet Explains it All” So you're standing at Wal-Mart It's three in the morning Heavy eyes and a heavy heart And your favorite ex-girlfriend Cracking jokes like you used to Cause it's all that can do And you're trying to find sweatpants The kind without drawstrings Cause when your kid tries to kill herself You've gotta consider these things Buying clothes for the hospital Yeah, the pamphlet explains it all And Mama never told you There'd be days like this Got you screaming into pillows Like to ball up a fist And punch the world in the face Now you're back at the ex's house Trying to hide the kitchen knives And wondering out loud How you'll ever get on with your lives And your hands touch by accident And you think you just might But then you've had enough drama For one damned night And Mama never told you There'd be days like this Got you screaming into pillows Like to ball up a fist And punch the world in the face Right in its stupid face And the sun's been up for hours You're just staring at the wall Got your telephone in one hand As if there's someone you can call If you've got any questions Bout how maybe it's your fault But the pamphlet explains it all
8.
Home 02:39
“Home” I like that last part of the flight When Dallas rushes into view Yeah, like a million ants living a million ant lives I guess it ain't far from the truth But maybe now is not the time For philosophizing, no Maybe I'm just glad to be back home I'm just glad to be back home And the driver smells like cigarettes And he ain't great with social cues And he just can't believe this weather we're getting And his friend plays the guitar, too Kinda makes me miss New York a little Where your business is your own But still I'm glad to be back home I'm glad to be back home And we pull into the neighborhood Where everything kinda feels like mine And I wonder down the driveway And I lock the door behind And breathe I say hello out of habit And let it hang there in the air And I don't feel alone or nothing like it There just ain't nobody here And I hear a faucet dripping Maybe I'll fix it or I won't Maybe I'm just glad to be back home I'm glad to be back home I'm glad to be back home I'm glad to be back home
9.
Jim 00:50
“Jim” If you were named James And you said call me Jim Or Jimmy or Jaime Him, her, or them I would do it Cause you said so And you know who you are Jesus Christ, people It isn't that hard
10.
“In There Somewhere” There's a houndstooth coat with a thirty inch waist I was gonna wear it again when I dropped the weight I was gonna take my baby dancing, yes Some of our best laid plans they're best laid to rest And left safe to gather dust In the museum of all that I gave up Or could have been, or can't remember It's been years But it's in there somewhere It's in there somewhere I ought to cancel these magazine subscriptions Cause truth is I'm running out of space to fit them And I don't read them anymore You know with their home improvements and their great outdoors And my son tells me it's a fire risk It used to be “Daddy, how do you live like this?” Then those self-help books Well, I'm just glad to know he cares And they're in there somewhere They're in there somewhere In an ordinary house On an ordinary block Piled with ordinary stuff From the bottom to the top Stacked up careful For to the keep the aisles clear It's silly, but there's this guy I used to know And god it wasn't even all that long ago He said one goodbye and ever since He don't ever want to say goodbye again And he's in a photo that I look at sometimes In his houndstooth coat with his lovely bride And that spark that burned so bright Then disappeared But it's in there somewhere It's in there somewhere
11.
Nonsense 02:52
“Nonsense” I think I'll climb a tree today Go out and buy myself a single serving of birthday cake Gonna text you a picture of a turtle I saw I've been growing up a long time But it never seems to take And I've got no guidebook for living in an angry world I've got not guidebook for being a good man But I've got this guidebook, tells me that's a map turtle I think I'm gonna follow it See if there's treasure at the end Awoo awoo oo oo Sing a little nonsense and search it for meaning Awoo awoo oo oo Love is the answer but I forgot what you asked Awoo awoo oo oo Sing a little nonsense and search it for meaning Awoo Love is the answer But I forgot And I am an intrepid explorer I am a grown-ass man but I am still a Boy Scout And I saw some graffiti on a bridge back there You fall into a funk, you gotta dance your way out Awoo awoo oo oo Sing a little nonsense and search it for meaning Awoo awoo oo oo Love is the answer but I forgot what you asked Awoo awoo oo oo Sing a little nonsense and search it for meaning Awoo Love is the answer Et cetera And there is a reliable kiss at the front door There is popcorn and a TV set There is a reason to smile when I can't sometimes There's a “Why are your shoes all wet?” Awoo awoo oo oo Sing a little nonsense and search it for meaning Awoo awoo oo oo Love is the answer but I forgot what you asked Awoo awoo oo oo Sing a little nonsense and search it for meaning Awoo Love is the answer But I forgot
